  • Getting started

Before getting started, sign in to Xbox LIVE to make sure that your console software is up to date.
For best results, make sure that you have the following

    Clarity

Speak clearly in your natural voice.

We recommend you run the audio tuner if any of the following are true:
    • Kinect has trouble hearing your voice commands
    • You are having trouble being heard when chatting
    • Kinect's voice controls are activating when you don’t what them to.
    • You have moved Kinect
    • You have changed the location or number of speakers in your room
    • Start the Kinect Audio Tuner

Use the Kinect audio tuner to calibrate audio for your play space. Use the audio tuner if you move Kinect, add speakers, or if you are experiencing any of the following problems:
      • Kinect voice commands are not working as expected.
      • Other players can’t hear you.
      • Other players hear an echo when you join a game or chat session.
      • Before you begin, make sure you do not have a wired headset plugged into any controllers.

      1. Press the Guide button.

      2. Select Kinect Tuner.

Setting up Kinect ID

You can teach Kinect to recognize your face and automatically sign you in to your profile using Kinect ID.
To set up a Kinect ID
  1. Go to My Xbox and sign with your profile.
  2. Wave to Kinect to open the Kinect Hub. Learn how to wave.
  3. Hover your hand over Kinect ID.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Kinect ID.
You will be asked to hold different poses while the sensor learns to identify you.

Move to the green square. If you can't reach a square, wait until the square changes and move to the next one.

  5. Once your Kinect ID is set up, you only need to face the sensor for a few seconds before Kinect signs you in to your profile.

    Tips:
    • Run Kinect ID setup in various lighting conditions to improve Kinect ID accuracy. Kinect ID remembers your previous sessions and improves recognition each time it is run.
    • Kinect can identify up to four different players at once using Kinect ID.
    • If you recover an Xbox LIVE gamer profile, you will need to run Kinect ID setup again for that gamertag.
    • If you want to move your Kinect ID to another Xbox 360 console, save your gamer profile on a USB flash drive or memory unit.

Troubleshoot body tracking

Troubleshoot body tracking

Before you start

Before getting started, sign in to Xbox LIVE to make sure that your console software is up to date.
For Kinect to see you and track your body, you need four things:
Proper sensor placement

1. Proper sensor placement

The sensor should be positioned 2 – 6 feet (.6 – 1.8 m) off the floor, with nothing between you and the sensor.
If the light on the sensor is green, the sensor is connected and ready to go. No green light?
While playing, remember to stay the recommended distance from the sensor.

2. A clear play space

Make sure there is at least 6 feet (1.8 m) of empty space between the sensor and you. For two players, allow 8 feet (2.4 m) or more.
Bad Lighting

3. Good lighting

Make sure your room has enough light so that your face is clearly visible and evenly lit. Try to minimize side or back lighting, especially from a window.
Some lighting conditions can make it difficult for Kinect to identify you or track your movements.
For best tracking results avoid positioning the sensor or player in direct sunlight.
Make sure the room has bright, even lighting.
Bad Lighting

4. Player considerations

Players need to be at least 40 inches tall (1 m).
Face the sensor and make sure nothing is covering your face, such as a hat, your hair, or reflective glasses.
Try to avoid wearing baggy clothing.
Some black clothing dyes may absorb infrared light, making it difficult for Kinect to track you accurately.
Note Keep some distance from other players, furniture, and walls.

Body Tracking Tuner

The Kinect Tuner helps you find and correct body tracking problems.
You will be guided through the following steps:
  1. Position the sensor
  2. Set up body tracking
  3. Test body tracking

1. Position the sensor

  • Make sure the sensor is not too far back on the shelf and that there is nothing in front of the sensor (for example, make sure the sensor is not positioned behind glass).
  • Make sure nothing is preventing the sensor from automatically tilting up or down.
  • The packaging foam between the sensor and the base should be removed.

2. Set up body tracking

Stand where the sensor can see your entire body. You should see an outline of your body with a dot on your head, both hands, and both feet. You might need to step forward or backward within the play space.
If Kinect cannot see your entire body, select Adjust Angle to tilt the sensor up or down.

3. Test body tracking

If you cannot see your entire body on the screen, select Adjust Angle

Select Tracking Test to make sure Kinect is tracking your body movements correctly. The tracking test tells you if there are tracking problems and suggest ways to correct the problem.
For example, move closer if the sensor cannot see you. Once you have corrected the problem, select Try Again.

Correct the tracking problem and then select Try Again
If your picture is displayed on the screen, the sensor is having trouble seeing your face.

Head not detected
If this happens, try the following:
  • Make sure nothing is covering your face such as a hat, your hair, or reflective glasses.
  • Face the sensor.
  • Make sure your face is well lit.
  • Make sure the sensor is positioned 2 to 6 feet (.6 m - 1.8 m) from the floor.
Once you have corrected all problems, you will see this screen:

Save the Kinect Tuner settings
Note Be sure to complete the Kinect Tuner so that your settings are saved.
